One of the most common (and costly) mistakes golfers make is failing to call a provisional ball when there’s a risk that their original shot is lost or out of bounds. Here’s why knowing and following this rule is essential:
If a golfer loses a ball and hasn’t declared a provisional, they must return to the spot of their last shot under the stroke-and-distance rule. That means not only adding a penalty stroke but also having to replay the shot, which can be a huge setback.
In order for the provisional ball to be just that, you must state that ball is a 'provisional, call 'rule 18.3' or it will suffice if you say you are playing another 'just in case'.
